GARDEN TOUR April 2, 2011

The Gardeners of Tucson purpose in sponsoring the garden tour is always to share what we've learned as well as accomplishing modest fund-raising
to cover our expenses and further our organizational cause.  Usually we can proudly display colorful banks of flowers, blooming shrubs and
dramatic cacti.

The sustained drop at l8 degrees has little precedence and the resulting die-back has pronounced a quandary in our otherwise joyful spring plans.
Since we are GARDENERS, which implies a willingness to try new species and move plants about if they are pouty and obstinate, we have decided
as a club to make the best of a bad situation and, once again share what we have learned ...this time about plants' degree of resilience in dipping temperatures.

In years of rather stable winter weather we have become adventurous in trying out a variety of imported species.  Many of these plants if left outdoors
now seem to be history and the grayness of the drying clumps stimulates the urge to trim or replace.  The theme for this year's garden tour
"Reviving
GrayGardens" recognizes that we're all in the same fix....and the uncertainty over whether or not 18 degrees will be repeated should arouse caution
in our approach.   Perhaps desert adapted plants will win new respect if climate change is a perceived constant.

The featured gardeners on the tour have been taking notes and plan to share their observations; participating in the tour will be a way for visiting
gardeners to learn from our experiences.

Our gardens are a bleak gray and we're making every effort to revive them to make your investment in our tour a wise educational choice.  You are
also invited to consider membership in our organization and get a year of helpful suggestions.
